Housing Crisis: Free House Giveaway – Closed

Eugene, Oregon: Dec/07/08 – Faced with selling his house in a slow economy, George Tran, decided to be creative by is giving away his house in Oregon to the most worthy family via the Internet. Users were asked to pay a $19.95 registration fee, and tell readers why they should receive the house and have the Internet decide via Digg.com; a popular newsworthiness rating site.  Tran was notified by the Oregon Dept. of Justice and was ordered to shut the site down.

Using the letter of the law, rather than the spirit of the law, the Dept. of Justice stated that the competition did not follow code because no official judges were appointed, and the public does not constitute a “judge” and thus failed to comply.  Furthermore, popular vote via the Internet was not a skill but a game of chance.  To argue this, Tran would have to put up a legal defense.

As of noon Saturday Dec 06, 08, the competition was closed down.  Every contestant’s money was refunded.

The 3 bedroom, 2 bath 1413 sq. ft house is now listed on the market at $230,000.  It is also available on a rent to own basis for $1400/m.  More information can be found at freehouse.wordpress.com.

Tran was deeply moved by the stories and feels for the families struggling financially.  Doing his bit for the economy, he is offer advice to help families find prosperity.  People can email Tran at prosperity@i360connect.com to receive a free gift.

Tran is the Founder of i360connect.com; a social network application to help non-profit organizations by allowing their members and give “micro-donations” (small monthly contributions of $5 or less) to help non-profits get off the fund raising treadmill.

Housing Bubble: Can’t Sell House, Why Not Give it Away?

Eugene, Oregon: Oct 30, 2008 – Faced with selling his house in a slow economy, Internet marketer George Tran, decided to do something fun and creative, while benefiting three non-profit organizations at the same time.  He is giving away his house in Veneta, Oregon to the most worthy family via the Internet.  Users are asked to submit their story (at freehouse.wordpress.com) as to why they are the most worthy to receive the house, and have the Internet decide.  The story with the highest number of votes will receive title to the house as a Christmas present.

The deal is very simple.  Users are asked to pay  a $19.95 registration fee to be in the running.  They write their story and submit it to Digg.com, a popular website that allows users to rate stories for newsworthiness.  At midnight December 22nd, 2008, the entry with the highest number of Diggs will be awarded ownership to the house or $100,000 cash. Any proceeds above $300,000 will be donated equally to Habitat for Humanity, Best Friends Animal Shelter, and Citizens for Health.

This is the first of its kind giveaway in the world as it uses social media to select the winner; prior contests are judged by the operator.  This is unique because the winner is not determined by pure chance, but by the passion of the contestant and the uniqueness of their story.  It gives contestants much more control of the possible outcome, and ultimately the world gets to decide who the most worthy family is to receive the house.

Tran said, “We bought the house in 2005 for $250,000, and had a horrible tenant that trashed the place and never paid any rent.  As a result, we spent $40,000 to renovate the place.  We were told by our agent, Jody Draper from Keller Williams, that it may take 11 months, or more, to sell in this market.  As Internet marketers, my wife and I thought, why not use social media and see if we can give it away?  We also want to make the offer relevant to more people as not everyone want to move to Oregon, so we decided to award the winner with their choice of the house or $100,000 cash.”  The property is located at 24720 Vaughn Rd, Veneta, Oregon, 97487, is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath 1413 sq ft house with a double garage, located on 1 acre and is surrounded by trees.  It is currently listed, through Keller Williams, for $230,000.  Veneta is located about 20 minutes away from Eugene, Oregon.

George Tran is the Founder of 1Shoppingcart.com, now a public company (WSPI), and single-handedly programmed the entire system himself.  1Shoppingcart is the most widely used e-commerce solution by internet marketers in the world today.  His latest venture is i360connect.com; a social network application to help non-profit organizations by allowing their members and give “micro-donations” (small monthly contributions of $5 or less) to fund those organizations.  George retired at the age of 32 and lives in Eugene, Oregon with his wife, Carol Anne.
